Minecraft Enchanting List
If you're like me and keep forgetting which enchantments you'll need to maximize your gear, then here's a convenient checklist of each enchantment you'll need.
Table of Contents
Armor
| Item | Enchantments | Special Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Helmet |
Protection IV[1] Respiration III Unbreaking III Aqua Affinity Mending[2] |
Respiration can be made redundant through Potions of Water Breathing, only requiring a Potion system and Pufferfish from Fishing. |
| Chestplate |
Protection IV[1] Unbreaking III Mending[2] |
Currently, the Chestplate is the only armor type without a special enchantment (not counting the Elytra). |
| Leggings |
Protection I[1] Swift Sneak III Unbreaking III Mending[2] |
Swift Sneak is limited to Ancient Cities. |
| Boots |
Protection IV[1] Feather Falling IV Unbreaking III Soul Speed III Depth Strider Mending[2] |
Soul Speed is limited to Piglin Trading. Further, while not technically redundant like the Helmet's Respiration enchantment, a similar effect can be acquired through Potions of Speed or Beacon effects. Of course, the effect could be further increased by using a combination of the two. Due to the large number of enchantments available on the boots, this item is already close to the limit on possible enchantment with the Work Priority penalty. Try to keep as many of these enchantments to their max as possible (such as combining two Protection III books into IV) or remove some of the less useful enchantments. |
General Notes
[1] Protection IV and the variants of Protection are mutually exclusive. This guide gives you the best enchantments for general gear and gear specialized for certain use cases. If desired, swap out Protection with one of its variants for more specialized protection in that area but less protection otherwise.
[2] Mending is limited to either loot chests or rare fishing loot.
Tools (General)
| Item | Enchantments | Notes |
|---|---|---|
|
Pickaxe [Silk Touch] |
Efficiency V[1] Unbreaking III Silk Touch Mending[2] |
Silk Touch and Fortune are mutually exclusive enchantments; however, it's worth considering having one of each for mining as Fortune trips may quickly take multiple stacks, whereas Silk Touch trips will stay in the original ore and can be broken later in a controlled environment. |

Pickaxe [Fortune] |
Efficiency V[1] Unbreaking III Silk Touch Mending[2] |
Silk Touch and Fortune are mutually exclusive enchantments; however, it's worth considering having one of each for mining as Fortune trips may quickly take multiple stacks, whereas Silk Touch trips will stay in the original ore and can be broken later in a controlled environment. |
|
Axe [Silk Touch] |
Efficiency V[1] Unbreaking III Silk Touch Mending[2] |
Silk Touch and Fortune are mutually exclusive enchantments. |
|
Axe [Fortune] |
Efficiency V[1] Unbreaking III Silk Touch Mending[2] |
Silk Touch and Fortune are mutually exclusive enchantments; however, Axes can specifically increase the mining speed and item drops for plants such as Melons and Cocoa Beans. If you don't want to spend the experience on a farming axe on a limited number of plants, this one may be skipped. |
| Shovel |
Efficiency V[1] Unbreaking III Silk Touch Mending[2] |
Silk Touch and Fortune are mutually exclusive enchantments; unlike on the Pickaxe, however, the Shovel does not have any tool-specific advantage for using Fortune in particular. |
| Hoe |
Efficiency V[1] Unbreaking III Fortune III Mending[2] |
Silk Touch and Fortune are mutually exclusive enchantments; unlike on the Pickaxe, however, the Hoe does not have mine any items that would benefit from Silk Touch faster and Fortune increases the odds of Apple drops from trees. If you don't plan on manually breaking leaves, however, this enchantment can be skipped entirely. A case can be made that Silk Touch can be used to mine Leaves faster. However, a pair of Shears only cost two Iron Ingots (and no experience) to do the same thing. |
General Notes
[2] Mending is limited to either loot chests or rare fishing loot.
Tools (Specialized)
| Item | Enchantments | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fishing Rod |
Lure III Luck of the Sea III Unbreaking III Mending[1] |
The Enchanted Fishing Rod can be obtained exclusively through Fishing. On top of Enchanted Fishing Rods already being a rare Fishing drop, Fishing also provides experience on any successful Fishing attempt regardless of the result. Enchanted Fishing Rods can be combined as soon as they are acquired (though it may be easier to enchant an unenchanted Fishing Rod at an Enchanting Table to speed up the process, at least until you get Luck of the Sea III to increase treasure odds. |
|
Trident [Travel] |
Riptide III Unbreaking III Mending[1] |
This trident is exclusively made to take advantage of Riptide's travel utility. It cannot be used for normal combat. Further, Riptide is mutually exclusive with the damage dealing enchatments Loyalty and Channeling. |
| Elytra |
Unbreaking III Mending[1] |
The Elytra is the only enchantable item that cannot be used in an Enchanting Table. While this is suggested already, the Elytra explicitly requires an Enchanting Book Set-Up of some kind (including just using an Enchanting Table to get an Unbreaking III book, though you'd still need to acquire a Mending book through other means). |
|
Sword [Mob Spawner Farming] |
Spawner Dependent a Unbreaking III Looting III Mending[1] |
a This sword is designed explicitly for farming at some sort of mob farm, whether with a Mob Spawner block or a specially built construct. Dending on the farm, use:
Depending on how often you use these mob farms, the Fortune enchantment could be considered redundant; you will receive a ton of, for sake of discussion, extra Arrows you don't have a use for from a dedicated Skeleton spawner. However, this enchantment also increases the odds of rare mob drops, such as that same skeleton's enchanted bow (which can either be kept or disenchanted for extra experience points). |
General Notes
[1] Mending is limited to either loot chests or rare fishing loot.
Combat
| Item | Enchantments | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sword |
Sharpness V[1] Looting III Unbreaking III Knockback II[2] Fire Aspect II[3] Mending[4] |
|
| Spear |
Sharpness V[1] Looting III Unbreaking III Lunge III Knockback II[2] Fire Aspect II[3] Mending[4] |
|
| Bow |
Power V Unbreaking Punch II Flame Mending[a] |
Similar to the Fishing Rod, an Enchanted Bow can be fully acquired through the Fishing mechanic. This also provides an opportunity to acquire Mending without spending a rare Enchanted Book on it if you have not set up a Mending Trade Villager already. Depending on how far away the mob you're firing at is, the Punch enchantment may be redundant (you're already firing at them from a distance). [a] Furter note on Mending, this enchantment is mutually exclusive on only the Bow with Infinity (for obvious reasons). Choose whichever enchantment you believe will be the most effective for you, though arrows are easily farmable with a number of different set-ups. |
| Shield |
Unbreaking III Mending |

Trident [Combat] |
Impaling V Unbreaking III Loyalty III Channeling I Mending |
|
|
Axe [Combat] |
Sharpness V[1] Unbreaking III Mending |
More combat enchantments are currently being tested on the Axe in snapshots (Cleaivng, Looting, Knockback, Fire Aspect, and Sweeping Edge); when and if they are added to a main update, this section will be updated. |
General Notes
[1] Sharpness is mutually exclusive with both Smite and Bane of Arthropds. If desired, replace with one of those two. However, Sharpness V does additional damage to every mob rather than specialized lists, and not every mob has a special enchantment. It is instead recommended to make an additional sword with the specialized type if it is needed (see Sword [Mob Spawner Farming] for a specialized sword designed specifically for farming in extreme cases).
[2] Knockback is useful for pushing back unwanted mobs, but by nature makes fights take longer. This enchantment is better for PvP scenarios and emergencies. This enchantment can be skipped if desired.
[3] Fire Aspect is a powerful enchantment that furthers damage on any mob and is useful for niche farming scenarios ("cooking" passive mobs when defeated, such as cows, chickens, and potatoes if a Zombie happens to drop one while on fire). However, this also means you put yourself at risk, as a mob on fire that attacks you will set you on fire as well. Further, this enchantment makes Enderman hunting in particular more difficult, as they will teleport around wildly, making normal combat with them virtually impossible until the fire wears off. This enchantment can easily be skipped, r a second sword can be made similar to the Mob Spawner Farming one above.
[4] Mending is limited to either loot chests or rare fishing loot.
