Pokémon Legends: Z–A

Season 03 Rumination

A new month brings a new season! With Season 02 of Legends: Z–A, we now have access to the Legendary Pokémon this game's main campaign provides.

Following up from Season One, I decided to just tweak the previous team a little bit. With only three Pokémon being added, I couldn't see the format changing too much, and one of the new Pokémon perfectly filled a niche role I was looking to replace already. Without further ado...

Team Comp

Xerneas
Gyarados
Glaceon

This team in Season 03 is entirely unchanged from the previous team. As I said earlier, the only difference this season was that Zygarde was an optin in the roster. I decided that this team worked well in the previous season and already heavily countered Zygarde, so there wasn't a point in changing it. Right?

The team did not do as well this season, but it still overall performed really well. I'm not a big fan of how many ties I had this season, but a win's a win nonetheless. The bigger issue with this season came down to how well I prepared for the season.

If you scroll down, you'll notice that there are two separate entries for my run, one starting at Rank Z and one starting at Rank F. I refer to these two eras as BME and ME: "Before Mewtwo Era" and "Mewtwo Era." The Mystery Gift that added Mewtwo to the roster took place in the middle of the season, and I did not prepare for this when deciding on which team to play. I didn't want to change the team mid-season because of this, and my score went down overall, but I wouldn't say I'm disappointed with the end result. Regardless, Mewtwo was the biggest threat against this team.

If I had one more first place run at any point, I would have hit Rank A with one fewer games and won with an overall win rate in the 70%s, so it's not like it was a disaster.

Recap & Moving Forward

Had I kept going with that first run instead of waiting, I think this team would have done a lot better than it had overall. It was just as consistent as it was last season; I only stopped for the day because I needed to take a break and work on something else that day and had no way of knowing a new fighter was about to approach.

I still won more games than I lost on that second set of runs, but Mewtwo was faster than both of the Pokémon that could technically counter it and could one-shot them both unless I snuck up on the Mewtwo. Our next season should add a completely new roster, so I'm not going to dwell too much on what I could have done differently. Maybe I could have run Silver Wind on Xerneas for a Bug-type Super Effective move.

I do know I'd try to at least complete my run in the same weekend, though.
